The history of the Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Health Studies began in 2007, but its existence is built on solid foundations and years of experience in nursing education in Pardubice, whose roots date back to 1930.

The activities of the Department of Nursing directly follow previous five-year period of operation of the Institute of Health Studies. The longest tradition at the Department belongs to the education of general nurses in the Bachelor’s degree programme Nursing, which has been implemented at the University of Pardubice since 2002. Seemingly young study programme is based on more than fifty years of experience in nursing education at Secondary Nursing School of Pardubice which is known for the high quality of lessons and its graduates. The youngest offered Bachelor’s degree study programme is Specializations in Health with attractive branch Paramedic, which originated as a joint study programme/branch with the Faculty of Military Health Sciences in Hradec Kralove of the University of Defence in Brno.

Currently, the Department of Nursing offers Bachelor’s degree study programme Nursing, branch General Nurse in both full-time and combined form of studies, Bachelor’s degree study programme Specializations in Health, branch Paramedic in full-time form of study, Master’s degree study programme Nursing, branches Nursing Care in Internal Medicine and Nursing in Selected Clinical Branches – all of them in full-time form of studies.

The aim of the Department is to prepare and realize such study programmes, which enable students to gain education and professional qualification for the medical profession in accordance with the criteria and requirements of the World Health Organizations, and which prepare students for their profession in different areas of the health care system. Its aim is to expand the offer of study programmes and branches to build upon the needs and requirements of practice.

In scientific and research work the Department of Nursing participates in research projects of the Faculty of Health Studies, internal grants of the University of Pardubice, grants of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic and other projects primarily focused on improving the quality of nursing care. In collaboration with other specialists the Department participates on studies from different medical fields, psychology and pharmacology, which aim to evaluate or as the case may be to improve diagnostic and therapeutic methods, to improve awareness and quality of life of patients. The academic staff of the Department closely collaborates mainly with individual clinical departments in the Regional Hospital of Pardubice (joint venture), with Emergency Medical Service of the Hradec Kralove Region, Emergency Medical Service of the Pardubice Region or the Hospice of St. Stephen in Litomerice.

In accordance with the aims of the Faculty, the Department supports and develops mutual cooperation with Czech and foreign universities focusing on nursing education and related branches
