eng Rating of Pleasantness of the Odorants as an Olfactory Screening. Introduction The most important function of the olfaction is to protect organism against various toxins, polluted air and ingestion of spoiled food. Rating of pleasantness and fetidness can give us important information about the function of the olfaction. Therefore we posed a question: Is it possible to screen olfactory dysfunction in population using test based on odor pleasantness? To answer the question we used pen-like odor dispensing devices filled with pleasant (chocolate, walnut) and fetid (mercaptan, n-butanol) odorants. Method Subjects (in total 60) were tested by Odorized Markers Test, by Sniffin´ Sticks test (part Identification) and by the new test of pleasantness (14 odorants). Healthy people as well as patients suffering from smell impairment were tested. Results Based on results of healthy people right answers of the new test of pleasantness were stated. Correlation coefficients among all tests reached from 0.62 to 0.82. Using principal component analysis patients with olfactory dysfunction were depicted as remote points from healthy people in all three tests. Healthy people reached higher score than patients in all three tests. Conclusion First data suggests that pleasantness of odors can be used to assess olfaction in psychophysical olfactory tests.
