eng Dysphagia: developing a screening tool for patients with cerebrovascular accident Dyspahgia is a common problem in patients with cerebrovascular accidents (CVA). The authors describe a research study that aims to develop a simple screening tool that could be used to conduct dysphagia screening in patients with CVA and with other neurological diseases. A trained clinician performed a bedside examination of swallowing and a swallow test using thickened and unthickened fluids. Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is used as an objective verification method of the swallowing function. Results in 44 patients show that some physical assessment and fluid swallow abnormalities are associated with abnormal FEES. Further research is being conducted to confirm the emerging trends.
