eng Communication difficulties of people with occupational hearing loss: Evaluation by tone audiometry threshold and Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults at the otorhinolaryngology department Introduction: Evaluation of subjective communication problems of people with hearing loss is important for supplementing standard diagnostic methods. Often two patients with the same level of hearing loss have different communication difficulties in everyday life. This topic has received minimal research attention. Aim of the study: To evaluate the severity of communication problems of people with occupational hearing loss at the otorhinolaryngology outpatient department in a hospital. Methods: A survey study was done. The sample consisted of 60 participants (47 male, 13 female). The inclusion criteria were: communication difficulties and symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss caused by long lasting exposure to noise. Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA) was used to evaluate the communication difficulties in emotional (E) and social (S) score. The hearing threshold by pure tone audiometry for the frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz was compared with the HHIA. The examination was performed in the ENT outpatient department. Spearman nonparametric correlation at a significance level of 0.05 was used. Results: The most highly significant correlation was found between the results of pure tone auditory threshold at 2000 Hz frequency and social score of HHIA (r=0.49). There was also a significant correlation (r=0.36) between 2000 Hz frequency and emotional score of HHIA. Discussion: The results show that the frequency of 2000 Hz is the most significant with respect to communication difficulties. We proved that this is a potential reason of serious communication trouble. The results show that the hard of hearing people are experiencing greater problems in the social sphere of life than in the emocional one. Relevance for research and practise: The identified communication problems are essential for hearing rehabilitation. The evaluation and elimination of communication barriers increase subjective well-being of people with hearing impairment.
