Nesoulad ve spolupráci těchto lidí, nezodpovědnost při výkonu své profese, neznalost nebo nezájem, mohou vést ke vzniku infekce v místě chirurgického výkonu, což je vždy pro pacienta velká zátěž. Takový pacient může trpět zhoršením zdravotního stavu, bolestí, nepohodlím a nežádoucími účinky z léků, které je nutno z hlediska infekce užívat. Někdy jsou třeba i další chirurgické výkony. Nutná bývá i delší hospitalizace a prodlužuje se doba rekonvalescence a pracovní neschopnosti, nejhorším důsledkem je smrt pacienta.
