eng The Reason for the Lack of Palliative Care in the Czech Republic: Views of Hospice Care Professionals Introduction: Death is one of the taboo topics in our society. People are not able to accept the defeat of medicine. Palliative care tries to help the terminally ill to find the sense of life and dignified death without pain. Aims: To determine what hospice care professionals believe constitutes barriers to providing palliative care for all the patiens in the Czech Republic. Methods: 9 hospice care professionals were purposively sampled. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken to examine specific barriers in palliative care. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed using framework analysis. Results: Participants believed that there are three main problems. Insufficient information of the patient about the illness, the absence of palliative care in hospitals and other institutions of long term care and the late arrival of patients to hospice. Patients who are admitted to the hospice are not truly informed about their condition and the type of care provided in a hospice. Treatment of pain and symptomatic care in other facilities are inadequate. Patients are referred to hospice care too late. Conclusion: Patients and families rarely request discharge hospice to die. Reasons may include: lack of information, persistent myths about hospices, lack of continuity between curative and palliative care, and absence of hospital palliative teams. Recommendations: Further research is needed into the awareness of physicians about hospices and palliative care. Facilitate patient’s communication. Encourage patients to discuss type of care and place of care. Improve links with health care, social care and hospice care. palliative care, czech republic, view, professionals, death, dying
