Abstract In the Czech Republic, the system of lifelong learning for non-medical health professions is still very vaguely defined. Based on the identification of key competencies the authors create a proposal for a system of lifelong education of midwives. The aim of the presentation is to present the partial results of the project with focus on identification of key competencies. The researchers used qualitative methods - a focus group and a subsequent discussion within the expert group. In the 1st phase of the research study, a complete set of key competencies of midwives was identified and was created birth certificates. For quality in midwifery, it is necessary to ensure a system of lifelong education, which will be created based on key competencies in close cooperation with the clinical practice.	life long learning; key competence; midwifery
