eng Factors affecting occupational noise-induced hearing loss Introduction: A significant number of people with hearing loss have the history of employment in a noisy environment. If the person is subjected to excessive noise, the hearing impairment usually develops. A primary prevention is based on noise reduction. This can be the result of use of low noise machines, reduction of time exposition or use of hearing protectors. Education about preventing hearing damage from noise belongs to the competence of audiological nurses. Aim of the study This study aims to evaluate the impact of selected factors affecting the severity of hearing impairment among employees working in a noisy environment. Methods: Research participants were recruited during the preventive physical examinations at the Otorhinolaryngology Clinic. The design of the research was based on the questionnaire and pure-tone audiometry. The questionnaire included the questions focused on the type of employment, the time of duration of employment, the usage of hearing protectors, the type of protective gear and the presence of other illnesses related to hearing loss. Results: The research sample consisted of 41 patients with sensorineural hearing loss and 23 patients without hearing loss sorted by the World Health Organization’s methodology. The most important factors were - the time of duration of employment in a noisy environment and the use of hearing protection. Discussion: and conclusion In the Czech Republic, employees in noise environment must use a protective gear, such as earplugs, and noise-cancelling headphones, however the exceptions are not rare. With adequate educational programs, it should be possible to raise the awareness and cooperation of these employees. Practical implications: The improvement of knowledge could reduce the health consequences for people working in a noisy environment. Maintaining a good hearing improves quality of life. Health promotion and prevention are among the main goals of nursing. Occupational hearing loss; audiometry; prevention
