eng Simulation training in midwifery education in the Czech Republic Background: Midwifery education in the Czech Republic is currently based on the requirements of the Directive of the European Union exactly specifying number of midwifery skills and procedures required for pre-registration midwifery education. In recent history the apprenticeship model of midwifery education has moved to an academic one with all midwifery programmes offering degree level only. The set standards for pre-registration education requirements are no less than 1800 practice hours and no less than 4600 theory hours. The current drive is to use simulation for skills teaching. AIM: Simulation skills should bridge the gap between theory and practice and most importantly give the students the skills and confidence to be able to respond to real life situations on their practice placements without making them feel unprepared. Methods: Our University has different types of obstetric simulators with different levels of fidelity. At present, we have been concentrating on teaching obstetric emergencies via simulation like: major postpartum haemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, neonatal resuscitation, maternal arrest and eclamptic seizure. We have sought a feedback from students post simulation sessions and hospital placement to evaluate its effectiveness. Results: The common themes from feedback were: increased confidence while performing tasks, improved communication skills, better team working. Students valued simulation as near real experience for practice. Conclusion: There are many reasons why simulation is the way forward. Among some reasons it is the safe environment within the University’s practice training lab, where students can learn and perform tasks repeatedly. Furthermore, simulation plays a major role in training and assessing the competences of student midwives. Grant support: At present, we are working towards grant support. Our hope is to start multidisciplinary team facilitated simulations with our partner hospital as simulation training simulation; midwifery; education; continuous professional development;
