eng Post-anaesthesia care unit, initiation of acute postoperative pain evaluation Introduction: In a post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU), care is focused on monitoring vital signs, solving complications and pain management. The early treatment of pain minimizes suffering and facilitates recovery. Objective: Find out the time (in minutes) of pain evaluation after admission to the PACU. Determine whether the time of pain assessment was in compliance with the medical facility’s guidelines. Methods: An analysis of the medical facility’s guidelines and records from the medical documentation of hospitalized adult patients was performed. There were 2 phases of data collection: (1) 2017, 2018, overt recording (539 rec.); (2) 2018, 2019, covert recording on the basis of the first phase results (91 rec.). Descriptive statistics and χ2 test were used. Results: 1st phase: in 2017, 90.49% of the pain was evaluated within 15 min (incl.) in accordance with the medical facility directive. However, 20–60 min. evaluations were also found in the dataset. In 2018, there was an improvement after interventions by the manager. Pain was first assessed within 15 min. (incl.) in line with the directive in 99.64% of the cases. 2nd phase: A statistically significant difference between the occurrences of “correct” records in overt observation vs. covert observation of records was confirmed. Conclusion: Some records were found to be in conflict with the guidelines. When observing the records covertly, worse results were found. We consider both conclusions risky to the patient and unethical. acute post-operative pain; pain evaluation; post-anaesthesia care unit; time
