eng Readability assessment of the Czech educational website “Active Living” for patients with multiple sclerosis Objectives: The aim was to assess readability of information concerning visual problems in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), available on a Czech educational website for patients with MS called “Active Living” (in Czech), using a so called Mistrík’s formula. A related aim was to simplify the excerpt by using a basic strategy and to reassess its readability. Methodology: Mistrík’s formula was used to calculate readability of a selected excerpt (13 sentences) accessible at http://www.aktivnizivot.cz/. The calculations were performed using Microsoft Excel. The resultant score was interpreted according to the formula’s creator, Jozef Mistrík. Finally, the excerpt was simplified by splitting 6 long sentences always into two shorter sentences. Readability of the simplified version was recalculated and interpreted, using the same method. Results: Readability of the excerpt was 17.43 “points” – it was at the level of very difficult comprehension (such texts can only be studied, not read). The adapted version contained a total of 19 sentences. The adapted excerpt contained 308 words as it was necessary to make slight adjustments to ensure a well-structured and smooth-flowing text. However, the content remained the same. Readability of the adapted excerpt was 27.25 “points”; it was almost at the level of average, easily comprehensible texts. Conclusions: MS is a complex affliction that requires, under the ideal conditions, active involvement of patients and their families. Printed EM and information on the internet can be used to provide information about various aspects of living with MS. At the same time, readability of such materials is of paramount importance. Readability of EM can be improved by using shorter sentences rather than longer ones. Nurses developing EM for patients with MS and their families should pay attention to this issue and should make an effort to simplify the content of such materials if it is feasible. assessment; comprehensibility; educational materials; Mistrík’s formula; multiple sclerosis; readability
