eng Determining convergent validity of pain scales and their preference in Czech women: Making evidence-based recommendations Introduction: In recent years, research has uncovered sex differences in pain in a variety of conditions. Pain is a common problem in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition with a higher prevalence in women than in men. In the Czech Republic (CR), research concerning pain experience in females with MS and, specifically, their subjective preference of pain intensity scales is lacking. Aim: To compare subjective preference of self-report pain intensity scales in Czech women with MS. Methods: Females with MS rated their pain intensity using three self-report pain scales: the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and Faces Pain Scale-Revised (FPS-R). Pain intensity was compared using Spearman rank order coefficient. Following this task, they ranked their preference of the scales according to their usability. Results: 33 female patients with MS receiving ambulatory or inpatient care in the neurological department of a regional hospital were enrolled (average age: 45.9 ± 14.5 years; average time since diagnosis: 10.1 ± 7.4 years). The correlation coefficient among the three scales ranged from FPS-R ranked first most often (n = 16; 48.5% of women), followed by VAS (n = 9; 27.3%), and NRS (n = 8; 24.2%). Conclusion: The results suggest that of the three pain intensity scales, the FPS-R could be the most suitable for use in Czech women with MS. Validity; pain scales; Czech women; multiple sclerosis
