eng Influence of children’s age on evaluation of odour pleasantness OBJECTIVE: Olfactory test of odour pleasantness may prove to be additions to comprehensive chemosensory test batteries used in clinical settings. Smell loss in children, it can be indicative of some childhood disorders and may be useful for understanding some diseases. METHODS: The participants were 182 healthy children, first group included 63 girls and 59 boys (range 6 – 7 years), second group included 31 girls and 29 boys (range 11 – 12 years). The sense of smell was tested Sniffin´ Sticks (12 – items identification test). At first to name the odour using the answer card (choice of 4 scents) and second participants were asked to categorize the hedonic tone of the odorant into five classes: very pleasant (2) pleasant (1), neutral (0), unpleasant (-1), and fetid or very unpleasant (-2). RESULTS: Median of the identification test was 8 in the first group (younger children) and 10 in the second group (older children). Unpleasant hedonic tones were typical for butter, fish and onion. Pleasant hedonic tones were typical for apple, orange and peach. Younger children categorized more often hedonic tone as a pleasant. The group of older children categorized hedonic tone of the odorant more often neutral. CONCLUSION: The present study showed decreasing ability of odour identification in younger age.
